A genealogist asked for help interpreting a church record, so I dug my Latin to English word lists to help. They may be useful for your own projects. Check out your options below.

  1. Latin Lesson for Research in Catholic Records This 2011 blog post provides readers with a basic word list for interpreting Catholic records. While it’s too simplistic for l8th and 19th century records, it should be helpful for the shorter records of the early 1900s.
  2. Latin Genealogical Word List: This About.com post translates words by topic, which makes it useful for addressing all sorts of documents – including wills.
  3. Latin Word List: FamilySearch‘s word list not only separates out date and time information from other words, but it also explains how the language is formed.

Happy hunting!
