Workday Wednesday: Garde-Champetre

What on earth is the occupation in the first row? Look closely…



It’s “garde  champetre.”  While “garde” is recognizable to most people as “guard,” what is “champetre”? I immediately thought that it might be related to “champs,” “field.”  And I was right. It’s a “field guard,” a term for rural policemen.
