Tuesday’s Tip: The Story of French

Have you ever wondered why French has had so much staying power in Luxembourg-even after French occupation ended? I finally was able to tackle one of the books on my reading list and would highly recommend The Story of French. Designed to be a history of the French language, the book covers how the language developed, gained power, and continues to have a foothold.

It doesn’t specifically cover Luxembourg, but it does suggest many of the reasons that French may have had such power in Luxembourg. France’s occupation and use of political power rooted the language, while the country’s cultural influence held it in place… It’s a good place to start understanding how your family’s linguistic past works.

Happy hunting!
